Gender Interesting Connections (links, articles, etc)

This blog is an opportunity to share ideas on gender. The challenge is to find something related to ideas generated by the essays we've read (and other essays in the future) and give our class the opportunity to share your discoveries. You may post links to articles, video clips, whatever you see as related. Below your submitted link, please give a short description of how you see your submission relating to the topic. Include a thought-provoking question. All links should be posted by Sunday night so we can sample them on Wednesday. These links can become sources for further citation in your papers.

This video connects with the topic, because women are more descriptive and worry a lot about what other people think. Men just tell the facts and that's it, they don't give description and move on from the subject.

This essay is awesome! It compares men and woman on a scientific level, it uses myths, biology, and even talks about how hormones really do affect boys and girls behavior. It shows how men and woman are different and i like all the facts because it makes disputing it extremely hard. :)

  4. The outside source that I found is an episode of the FX T.V. show "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia." The episode I found related to dating and the power struggle men and women have over each other. Within the episode, one of the men creates a system he believes to be fool proof to making any woman fall madly in love with him. He calls it the DENNIS system
    D-Demonstrate our value
    E-engage physically
    N-nurturing dependence
    N-Neglect Emotionally
    I-Inspire Hope
    S-Separate Entirely.
I wasn't able to find the whole episode, but I did find a clip, I'm sure you could find the whole episode online if you wanted. The clip goes through the system being completely ruined by everybody in the gang.

"It's Always Sunny" also depicts dating norms really well. When we were having a discussion on dating norms, and when I read the article by Bradley about dating, another episode of It's always sunny popped into my head.
In this episode one character, charlie, is forced to create his own dating profile and go out on dates which fail miserably.I have two clips, one about charlie's dating profile and the other about his actual date with someone. they both relate to our discussions because in both clips, charlie is forced to conform to what women want, and what the standard man is, along with courtship dating.

In this article, The author took several essays and articles pretaining to gender issues in advertising over a course of 30 years and put then togather in an this summary. She starts by explaining some reasons for using gender as an effective marketing tool and then gives a list of what articles she found. L.D. Wolin then gives brief findings on each of the topics then forms a disucusion about what here finds mean as a whole. The summary at the end, Wolin gives a small insight on what she found from the research. The article itself seems informative, but it should probably be used to find specific articles used to make it, the article itself not being a good source to cite, in my opinion.

In this video Jamie and Morgan put multiple people through a test to discover if men or women have a higher pain tolerance than the other. With all the stereotypes created by society about men and women, it just goes to show that not all are necessarily true. But in this video clip they only test a small number of people so do you think that some stereotypes are true for the majority?

In this article it explains how boys think about one thing in one compartment of their brain. They can't just switch topics and conversations. Boys are like waffles. But women on the other hand are all over the place with their thoughts and ccnversation. They are like spaghetti. Boys might find it difficult to comprehend a girl because girls can discuss things even with a look or nod.

  9. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23465208-marriage-hits-lowest-rate-since-records-began-almost-150-years-ago.do

This article gives data on how marriages have dropped so much in the last 150 years. According to the author, the main reason that marriage rates have dropped is because of all the laws turning marriage into a gamble almost. I think lots of men are afraid to take that risk and lose. Men are terrified of divorce because usually the laws favor the woman. Until the laws are changed I see marriage numbers falling even more. I was wondering why do the laws usually side with the female?

chris rock his off the topic of dating/relationships. i think that this video show real life insite, even thought its used in commical language. women do have a sense of different look towards how their partner will act and how their friends will act with relationships, as do men.

we talked about weddings in the discussion one day, and i think this is a topic that we didnt hit upon but toally fits to the difference in men and women. i totally thing that even for a wedding, there are differences. just like the importance of catching the flowers or under garments. there is different sized groups, and the amount of cheer and "yay" from each sex is different.

this friends clip totally explains it all!!!!!! this is the "tell the world" approach, or the "hey dude, toungued a chick tonight" approach... and there is a standard choosing per gender.

  11. My link pertains to divorce rates and their consistent rise in America. I think this is a topic definitely worth discussing. What factors in a married couples relationship act as catalysts in the marriage to file for a divorce? Are there trends for said reasons? Hmm. I am curious and would like to learn more on the subject..

Now, my second link is a video, pertaining to a cause of divorce.. Cheating on your spouse, can it really drive the significant other to lengths such as this? (Of course, maybe not to the extremes seen in the comedic sketch, but I'm sure it provokes feelings of revenge and uncertainty the men express in their encounter..)

Robert Todd has a very interesting example of men's attire being discriminated against in a workplace setting, while the women's is not, which is exactly what our discussion Wednesday covered.

The first link is to a music video called "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna. I liked how the lyrics really showed the struggle between gender and it made me wonder how the artists perceive the balance of power in dating between males and females.

    http://www.laweekly.com/2008-01-24/news/the-gender-boondoggle/2/

This article shows the power struggle between genders in the workforce. I liked how it brought a context to the conversations we had in class. For my question, I wonder what the exact standards are and should be for becoming a firefighter? I also used this source in my second paper.
